Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Corrective Action

Adjust the speedometer to read closer to the actual speed.

1. Protect the faceplate of the climate control unit under the center vent assembly with tape or a thin cloth.

2. Insert a small flat-tip screwdriver between the bottom of the vent assembly and the climate control unit. Angle the tip of the screwdriver downward slightly so it goes under the end of clip "B."

3. Work your fingertips behind the vent assembly in the lower left corner as you pry upward with the tip of the screwdriver. When the clip releases, keep your fingertips behind the assembly to hold it out slightly from the dashboard.

4. Insert the screwdriver under the clip "B" on the right side. Pry upward carefully to release this clip.

5. Use both hands to carefully pull the bottom of the vent assembly upward and outward.

6. The two remaining clips on the bottom of the vent assembly will unclip as you rotate the assembly upward and outward. When they unclip, remove the assembly from the dashboard.

7. Remove the shift knob by unscrewing it counterclockwise. Remove the gear position indicator trim panel (four clips). Remove the console panel (four clips).

8. Remove the radio and climate control system (four bolts).

9. Remove the driver's-side dashboard lower cover (eight clips).

10. Remove the switch panel assembly to the left of the steering column.

11. Remove the two instrument panel mounting screws.

12. Remove the instrument panel.

13. Remove the four gauge assembly mounting screws. Disconnect the 22-P and 30-P gauge panel connectors. Remove the gauge assembly from the dashboard.

14. Position the gauge assembly vertically next to the steering column. Reconnect the 22-P and 30-P connectors.

15. Support the car firmly with the front wheels off the ground.

16. Connect the PGM Tester. Reference the data list for the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).

17. Locate the low speed adjustment screw and the high speed adjustment screw on the back of the gauge assembly.

NOTE:
There are five adjustment screws on the back of the gauge assembly. Make sure you have located the proper adjustment screws; do not disturb the other three.

18. Start the engine. On the Premium model, reconnect the switch, then turn off the TCS.

19. Shift the transmission to "L." Bring the engine speed up to the point that the PGM Tester VSS reading is 19 mph, then hold it there. The speedometer should indicate 20 mph.

20. If the speedometer reading is more than 20 mph, turn the low speed adjustment screw to change the reading to 20 mph.

21. Shift the transmission to "D4." Bring the engine speed up to the point that the PGM Tester VSS output reads 76 mph, then hold it there. The speedometer should indicate 80 mph.

22. If the speedometer reading is more than 80 mph, turn the high speed adjustment screw to change the reading to 80 mph.

23. Verity the speedometer readings according to the chart shown.

PGM Tester Reading Speedometer Reading
20 mph 19 - 21 mph
40 mph 40 - 42 mph
60 mph 61 - 64 mph
80 mph 81 - 85 mph

NOTE:
The PGM Tester readings above are not the true vehicle speed. Use this chart strictly to verify that the speedometer is within tolerance.

24. Stop the wheels, shift the transmission to Park, and turn off the engine.

25. Disconnect the 22-P and 30-P connectors. Reposition the gauge assembly back in the dashboard, reconnect the 22-P and 30-P connectors, and install the mounting screws.

26. Reinstall all removed parts.
