SRS DTC Troubleshooting: 81-79

DTC 81-79: Front Passenger's Weight Sensors Initial Check Failure

NOTE: Before doing this troubleshooting procedure, review SRS Precautions and Procedures Service and Repair and General Troubleshooting Information. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

1. Clear the DTC memory. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

Does the SRS indicator stay on, and is DTC 81-79 indicated?
YES - Go to step 3.

NO - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.


3. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).

4. Make sure nothing is on the front passenger's seat.

5. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

Does the SRS indicator go off?
YES - Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time. Go to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes If another DTC is indicated, troubleshoot the DTC.

NO - Loosen the front passenger's seat mounting bolts, Front Seat Removal/Installation and shake the seat in all directions. Tighten the seat mounting bolts to the specified torque, then calibrate the ODS unit. Programming and Relearning If the problem is still present, replace the front passenger's weight sensor assembly, Service and Repair then clear the DTC, and if the problem is still present, replace the ODS unit, ODS Unit Replacement then clear the DTC.
