Product Update: Compass Displays Wrong Direction

BACKGROUND

During manufacturing, the incorrect software for the compass was installed in the audio unit. As a result, the the compass may display the wrong direction.

CLIENT NOTIFICATION

All owners of potentially affected vehicles will be sent a notification of this product update. An example of the client notification is shown in this service bulletin.

To verify vehicle eligibility, check for at least one of these items:

^ The client has a notification letter.

^ The vehicle is shown as eligible on a VIN status inquiry.

In addition, check for a punch mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN. A punch mark in that location means this campaign has already been completed.

Some vehicles affected by this campaign may be in your new vehicle inventory. These vehicles must be updated before they are sold or leased. To see if a vehicle is affected by this campaign, do a VIN status inquiry before selling it, leasing it, or returning it to a service client.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the audio unit software.

SOFTWARE INFORMATION

Audio Unit Software Update Disc: T/N 07AAZ-TL7A100 (Each dealership received a copy of this disc. Use this number if you need to order a replacement.)





WARRANTY INFORMATION

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Check if the vehicle TQI has been completed.

Is the TQI complete?

Yes - Go to step 6.

No - Go to step 2.

2. Install the No. 15 fuse (10 A, Backup) in the under-hood fuse/relay box.





3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

4. Turn on the audio unit.

5. Enter the audio system anti-theft code.





6. Start the engine.

7. Insert the audio unit software update disc.

8. The update starts automatically. The update takes about 1 minute, and the audio unit shows that it is playing tracks 1 thru 5. Do not turn off the engine or eject the disc during the update process.

9. Eject the update disc when prompted by the audio unit at track 6.

10. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), and remove the key.

11. Remove the No. 15 fuse from the under-hood fusel relay box for 90 seconds, then reinstall the fuse.





12. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

13. Turn on the audio unit.

14. Enter the audio system anti-theft code.

15. Turn off the audio unit.

16. To verify the update, check the software version by doing this:

^ Press and hold the SCAN button.

^ Press and release the SKIP UP button, then release the SCAN button.





^ Press and release preset button No. 2.





^ Check that software version RC 71BA appears on the display.





^ If the software version is not RC 71BA, go to step 6, and repeat the update procedure. Otherwise go to step 17.

17. Set the compass zone:

^ Press and hold the MENU button until it beeps (about 5 seconds).





^ Turn the selector knob to select ZONE.





^ Press the selector knob. The display shows the currently selected zone number.





^ Make sure the zone number is correct for your location. Find your location on the map below. If the corresponding zone number is not the one shown on the display, rotate the selector knob to select the correct zone.





^ Press the selector knob to set the zone.

NOTE:
Press the RETURN button if you need to return to the previous display. Press the MENU button to cancel the compass setting mode.

18. Calibrate the compass:

NOTE:
Calibrate the compass in an open area away from buildings, power lines, other vehicles, or any other sources of strong magnetic fields.

^ If the compass menu is not displayed, press and hold the MENU button until it beeps (about 5 seconds).





^ Turn the selector knob to select CALIBRATION.





^ Press the selector knob to select PUSH CAL START.





^ After you press the selector knob, the compass display blinks and the CAL indicator appears. Drive the vehicle slowly in three complete circles, taking at least 20 seconds to drive each circle. When the calibration is successfully completed, the compass display stops blinking and the CAL indicator goes off.

NOTE:
^ Press the RETURN button if you need to return to the previous display. Press the MENU button to cancel the compass setting mode.

^ The audio system is not related to the compass system. When the compass is calibrating, the audio display returns to the last selected display.

^ If the calibration fails, try again in a different location.

19. Center-punch a completion mark above the first character of the engine compartment VIN:





20. If the TQI was completed, the update is complete. Return the vehicle to the client or your dealer inventory. If the TQI was not completed, remove the No. 15 fuse, and reinstall the fuse box cover. Return the fuse and the anti-theft card to the glove box.
