If a vehicle has an inoperative A/C system, or the engine surges because of rapid cycling of the A/C compressor clutch, do not attempt to cure the problem by adding Freon (R-12) to the A/C refrigerant system.
If the maximum capacity (40.6 oz, 1150 g) of refrigerant is exceeded, liquid Freon may enter and damage the A/C compressor.
For an inoperative or rapid cycling A/C system, check the following:
- low pressure switch
- thermostatic cycling switch
- A/C programmer If these components are functioning normally and low freon charge is suspected, the refrigerant system should be evacuated and refilled.
WARNING
Always wear safety goggles when charging or discharging system.
Be sure work area is well ventilated. R-12 is heavier than air and can accumulate in areas of poor air circulation.
Avoid inhaling fumes when using flame type leak detector. R-12 becomes poisonous gas after coming into contact with open flame.
Note
During extremely hot weather, the A/C compressor clutch may cycle approx. every 10 seconds.
If the temperature is not as selected, check the programmer.
