Drivers or passengers in the front seat can possibly benefit from a kit designed to raise or lower the seat belt mounting point on the B-pillar.

Persons of small stature may find the shoulder belt can be moved away from contact with the neck by lowering the mounting point 50 mm.

Larger than normal persons may need the belt moved from the arm to the shoulder by raising the mounting point 50 mm.

The kit should be installed to accomodate the person who occupies a particular seat most often.

Work sequence

Seat Belt Mounting Point Height, Adjusting:





- remove cap from seat belt mount on B-pillar by prying off at side (arrow)

Note

A different type of trim cap was used on early production 1984 vehicles and must be removed as follows:

Remove Cap:





- remove cap 1 by prying upward with a screwdriver
- remove door weather seals from B-pillar

Remove B-Pillar Trim:





- remove B-pillar trim 2 by pulling retaining clips free at center and taking trim off at top toward rear (arrow)
- remove sound deadener to level of upper door hinge

Seat Belt Height Adjustment:




- slide fitting holder 3 (part of adapter kit) over threaded boss on B-pillar according to required location of new mounting point
- align fitting holder with center of hole A or dimension 20 (mm) and mark B-pillar at B or C

Note

Vehicles built after 5/83 already have the additional holes in the B-pillar.

- drill 18.5 mm hole at marked location
- deburr edge of hole and paint exposed bare metal surface
- place fitting holder on removed B-pillar trim, align and mark hole B or C
- make 19.4 mm hole in B-pillar trim at marked location

Seat Belt Height Adjustment:




- remove fitting 4 and washer 5 from holder 3 and insert holder into B-pillar through hole
- coat threads of adapter 4 with locking compound, Part No. D 000 600

Note

Adapter may already have a reddish coating on the threads. If so, it is not necessary to apply additional locking compound.

Seat Belt Height Adjustment:




- install adapter 4 and washer 5
^ tightening torque: 100 N-m + 20 (74 ft.lbs + 14)
- secure lower end of holder to prevent rattles
- cut 36 mm (1-3/8 in.) hole in sound deadener at adapter mounting location and install
- install B-pillar trim and door weather seals
- install seat belt swivel to B-pillar
^ tightening torque: 50 N-m + 10 (37 ft.lbs + 7)
