Two types of hood struts are installed in production. These differ considerably in the method of detaching the lower ball socket.
Use the following procedure for the appropriate strut when removing:

Work sequence
- support hood
Strut with plastic ball socket:
- lift retaining clip (arrow) about 4 mm with screwdriver
CAUTION
Do not take clip out of socket. Clip will be damaged if completely removed.
Strut with metal ball socket:
- pull pin (arrow) out with pliers
Gas-filled strut, discarding
After replacing gas-filled strut, gas must be released from unserviceable unit before discarding.
Work sequence
- put on protective goggles
- clamp first two inches of strut cylinder in vise (X)
WARNING
Never squeeze strut in vise in area other than shown.
- using hack saw, cut cylinder open immediately to right of vise
Note
Cover area being cut open with a rag to trap oil which will squirt out.
