General System Description
The ignition, fuel, and turbocharger systems are controlled by a 35 pin single control unit. The control unit also monitors input signals and will warn the driver if a fault exists in the system.
Incorporated in the engine controls is a digital ignition timing system. When the engine is running the following information is processed by the control unit.
- Engine speed
- Reference mark (60° before TDC #1)
- Hall sender (Identifies TDC #1)
- Intake manifold pressure
- Intake air temperature
- Engine coolant temperature
- Ignition knock
- Throttle position
The control unit processes the information from these sensors and determines the best possible ignition timing for all engine operating conditions.
A self check system inside the control unit will retard the ignition timing if any of the following components are defective.
- Knock sensor
- Engine coolant temperature sensor
- Pressure sensor
- Idle switch
- Intake air sensor
