Dealer & Owner Letter Information
Dear Audi Dealer:This is to inform you of the initiation of a service action for 1984 through 1987 model Audi 5000 gasoline vehicles.
Engineering studies have shown that excessive carbon deposits which may have settled on the engine's intake valves, can impair engine performance and should therefore be removed. For that purpose Audi of America has developed a special procedure which permits the removal of excessive carbon deposits without the necessity of dismantling the engine.

SUBJECT: SERVICE ACTION GH
Dear Audi Owner:
We are writing to you about an important program affecting the performance of the engine in your Audi.
Some owners of 1984 through 1987 model Audi 5000 vehicles have experienced impaired engine performance caused by gasoline related carbon deposits on intake valves and ports. When the deposits were first discovered, few gasolines contained additives which could prevent the deposit build-up, and even fewer could remove the deposits already in place.
Industry studies have shown that fuel type as well as driving conditions and temperature environment contribute to the formation of intake deposits. Consequently, it is impossible to recommend a specific type or brand of gasoline since the deposits occur randomly and in different parts of the country.
Audi has developed measures to retard the build up of deposits and to remove the deposits which have already formed.
If your Audi has experienced impaired engine performance, we invite you to contact your Audi dealer to schedule an appointment for intake valve and port checking and, if necessary, cleaning. This service will be provided one-time free of charge.
In order to prevent the deposits from forming again, you should use a fuel additive which contains "Techron(R)". Techron is specifically formulated to help in keeping valves and intake ports clean and reduce the formation of deposits. Our Autobahn Gasoline Additive which contains Techron is available at your Audi dealership.
We have enclosed a leaflet entitled "Gasoline and Engine Performance" which explains gasoline quality and its relationship to engine performance.
