Subject: Radiator Fan Bearings, Noisy


Radiator fan bearings, replacing





Parts required





^ disconnect battery ground strap

^ remove radiator cooling fan assembly w/motor


^ remove fan blade assembly

^ left hand threads (turn nut clockwise to loosen)

^ save lock washer and nut (arrows)

^ clamp fan motor in vise

^ clamp only at retaining bracket A


CAUTION

Part numbers are for reference only. Always check with your Parts Department for latest information.





^ open front bearing cover retaining tabs (arrows) with small chisel or punch

^ carefully pry off bearing cover





^ drill out eight bearing cap plate retaining rivets (arrows)

^ remove bearing cap plate

^ remove front fan bearing

^ install replacement bearing, Part No. 443 903 221

^ reinstall bearing cap plate to bearing cover with pop-rivets

^ remove armature with commutator from motor housing

^ place on clean work area

^ DO NOT allow oil or grease to get onto armature

^ turn over motor housing





^ open rear bearing cover retaining tabs, as shown





^ remove terminal retaining nuts and insulators (arrows)


CAUTION

DO NOT damage commutator brush plate insulator when removing/installing rear bearing cover.


^ remove rear bearing cover

^ it may be necessary to pry off with small screwdriver





^ remove commutator brush plate A in direction of arrow





^ remove rear bearing

^ use locally available small bearing puller

^ penetrating oil may be required install new bearing (arrow) Part No. 443 903 221


CAUTION

DO NOT damage brushes when reinstalling armature/commutator to brush plate.





^ reinstall armature/commutator to brush plate and rear bearing cover

^ reinstall insulators and terminal retaining nuts

^ damaged tabs may be repaired by making a small cut in the remainder of the tab and opening it with a chisel (as shown)





^ reinstall rear bearing cover

^ damaged tabs may be repaired by making a small cut in the remainder of the tab and opening it with a chisel (as shown)

^ reinstall fan assembly to motor

^ secure fan blade nut with locking compound

^ reconnect battery ground strap

^ start engine, check fan for proper operation and cycling
