The following exhaust system information will be added to the Audi 90 Repair Manual, General - Engine, at the next printing.
Exhaust system, removing/installing
Notes:
^ Align exhaust system free of tension.
^ Check exhaust system for leaks.
^ Separating point between center muffler and rear muffler, is indicated by a groove.
^ Always replace all seals and self-locking nuts.
^ Distribute exhaust system load evenly over all attachment points.
^ Tightening torque of bolts for fastening cross beam and the tunnel plate behind the floor, 40 Nm (30 ft lb).
Exhaust System:
1 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S), 50 Nm (37 ft lb)
^ Checking, see Repair Group 24
^ Lubricate threads with G5 but do not get grease into slot area of probe body
2 Bolt, 27 Nm (20 ft lb)
3 Exhaust manifold
^ Tube fitting for EGR, 27 Nm (20 ft lb)
4 Nut, 30 Nm (22 ft lb)
^ Note tightening method, Refer to Exhaust System /Aligning without tension.
5 Bolt, 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
6 Right front exhaust pipe with Three Way9atalytic Converter (TWC)
^ Plug for CO tap tube, 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
7 Nut
^ Upper nut welded tight to flange
8 Bolt
9 Sealing ring
10 Nut, 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
11 Intermediate pipe
12 Sealing ring
13 Holding ring
14 Rear muffler
^ Align end pipes
15 Holding loop
16 Center muffler
Adjust tension of exhaust system
17 Double clamp, 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
^ Tighten uniformly
^ Installation position, is critical
18 Nut
^ Lower nuts are welded tight to flange
19 Front Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)
^ Distance between front TWC and transmission must be at least 7 mm (0.28 in.)
20 Bracket for front exhaust pipe with TWC
21 Left front exhaust pipe with Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC)
^ Aligning, Refer to Exhaust System/Aligning without tension.
22 Heat shield plate
^ Mounting on cylinder head, 9 Nm (80 in.lb)
^ Connection to upper/lower heat shield plate, 5 Nm (44 in. lb)
23 Nut, 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
24 Washer
25 Exhaust manifold gasket
Center And Rear Mufflers:
Separating point between center muffler and rear muffler
A separating point is provided for replacing the center muffler and/or rear muffler.
- Separate exhaust pipe between center muffler and rear muffler at point indicated by groove.
^ Dimension -a- = approx. 975 mm (38 3/8 in.)
^ Double clamp to connect center and rear mufflers, 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
- Align rear muffler, Refer to Exhaust System /Aligning without tension.
^ Installation position of double clamp, is critical

1 Spacer
2 Rubber bushing
3 Washer
4 Nut, 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
5 Right front exhaust pipe with TWO
6 Left front exhaust pipe with TWO
7 Spacer
8 Straps
9 Pressure spring
