Subject:
Light Colored Metallic Paint, Appearance
Model(s):
All 1998, 1999, 2000
Supersedes T.B. Group 00 number 97-11 dated Sept. 11, 1997
Condition
Paint appears to be of different shades at different angles under different lighting conditions.
Appearance is created by the way light colored metallic and pearlescent paint retract light which gives the illusion of subtle (light/dark) color variations along certain contours of the vehicle.
The most common areas are shown -arrows-.
Service
This condition is normal, NO action is required.
As of m.y. 1998 the new bumper configuration has intelligent breakaway clips. Clips and mounting studs are replaceable and will minimize damage to bumpers and other panels in low speed collisions.
This new bumper design (form fit flush bumper with zero overhang) seems particularly prone to create this appearance.
To demonstrate this shadow effect, a set of painted demonstration panels together with a mounting base which incorporates a straight through cut as well as a 10° off-set cut were provided to each Dealer in Sept. 1997.
Note:
Please familiarize yourself and use this display unit to demonstrate to our Customers that the paint panels do in fact match when mounted in the straight through cut.
DO NOT attempt to repair/repaint bumpers or other panels which exhibit this condition.
If a customer shows concerns regarding this condition on his/her vehicle:
- Use the provided display to illustrate this illusion.
Note:
DO NOT attempt to repair/repaint bumpers or other panels which exhibit this condition.
