Control Assembly: Service and Repair



The coding of A/C control head -E87- is different for version 1 and version 2 air conditioner systems. If the A/C control head is replaced, attention must be paid to the correct application and the notes in the parts catalog.
- In vehicles with a version 1 air conditioner, only A/C control heads with replacement part numbers up to and including index "G" can or will be installed.
- In vehicles with a version 2 air conditioner, only A/C control heads with replacement part numbers up to and including index "P" can or will be installed.


NOTES:
- In the period from week 36 to week 44, 1998, there was a running change in production from the version 1 air conditioner to the version 2 air conditioner The two versions can be differentiated by specific characteristics. Application and ID
- In vehicles with the 8 cyl. engine, only version 2 air conditioner systems are used.
- Always check DTC memory before removing A/C control head -E87-.
- After replacing A/C control head -E87-, always:
- Check coding or enter new coding.
- Perform basic setting.
- Re-check DTC memory.
- The display panel on A/C control head -E87- can be switched from °C to °F and back by pressing and holding the "Recirculated Air" button, then pressing the temperature "+" button for the driver's side.
- If A/C control head -E87- remains on after the ignition has been switched off, test for short circuit to positive in the wiring to terminal 1 on connector D (connection for auxiliary heater) using wiring diagram.
- If a new A/C control head -E87-is installed and the display flashes for about 2 minutes when the ignition is switched on, code the A/C control head -E87- and perform basic setting.
- If the two display panels do not light up when the ignition is switched on, check the voltage supply from terminal 58d (dimmer) to A/C control head -E87-. See Read Measuring Value Block and Electrical testing.

Removing and Installing

Vehicles Without Radio Navigation System
- Remove radio. Procedures





- Remove center trim section of instrument panel. Service and Repair
- Remove bolts -A-.

NOTE: After removing the two lower screws -A-, the clips located in front of the fastening straps on A/C control head -E87- should be tipped forward and removed using a screw driver

- Remove A/C control head -E87- (-B-).





- Press back harness connector release catches -F- and disconnect harness connectors -A- through -D-.
- Press back connector release catches -G- and disconnect harness connector -E- (for rear window heating).


Vehicles With Radio Navigation System
- Remove radio navigation system.





- Remove screws -A-.
- Lift A/C control head -E87- (-B-) up slightly and remove in direction of arrow.

NOTE: In these vehicles, A/C control head -E87- is held underneath by latching tabs -C- and clamps -D-.





- Press back harness connector release catches -F- and disconnect harness connectors -A- through -D-.
- Press back harness connector release catches -G- and disconnect harness connector -E- (for rear window heating).

NOTES:
- The display panel and control buttons are illuminated by LEDs (which cannot be replaced).
- Different versions of -E87- are available as replacement parts, depending on the vehicle equipment (for example, with or without openings for seat heating switches).





To remove seat heating switch, press back retainer tabs -A- and pull switch -B- out of A/C control head -E87- from back.
If instrument panel interior temperature sensor -G56- is giving an incorrect reading, make sure intake grill on panel is not obstructed.
