Navigation System Displays Incorrect Distance Readings

Condition
In US cars, navigation system displays kilometers instead of miles. Customer changes language settings to American Imperial (miles) using center console switch. When ignition is cycled, system defaults to American Metric (kilometers).
In Canadian cars, navigation system displays miles instead of kilometers. Customer changes language settings to American Metric (kilometers) using center console switch. When ignition is cycled, system defaults to American Imperial (miles).
Production
Improved navigation control module software, dated Jan.18, 2000 or later, is available.
Service
- Verify condition.
Check software level of navigation control module at instrument panel as follows:
- Switch ignition ON.
- Press "NAV" button in center console.
- Press and hold "Info" and "Return" buttons in center console.
- Click center knob on "SW Version", then click "Enter" knob again.
^ Instrument panel shows software release date.
If navigation control module software release date is Jan. 18, 2000 or later:
- Correct any stored DTC's (see next step to check for DTC's).
- Verify that adaptation values 1, 2, 4, and 5 are correct, (see steps below for coding navigation control module).
If navigation control module software release date is before Jan. 18, 2000:
- Replace navigation control module with new module, Part No. 4B0 919 887 BX (See Repair Manual, Navigation System Control Module, Removing and Installing)
^ There is a yellow dot indicating "035" on the side of the new navigation control module chassis.
- Code new navigation control module (see steps below for coding navigation control module).

When procedure applies to vehicles within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty, use the table shown.
To Check For DTC's
- Connect VAS 5051 Diagnostic tool.
- Switch ignition ON.
- From VAS 5051 Start-up screen, select "Vehicle self-diagnosis".
- Select vehicle system "37-Navigation" (use scroll bar at right if necessary).
- Select diagnosis function "02-Interrogate fault memory".
- Correct any stored DTC according to Navigation System DTC table in Electrical Equipment section of the respective Repair Manual.
Note:
For any DTC's found, select "Print" and "Save Result". Do not print screens! (Select "Yes" at prompt "Erase old log?"; if applicable). Select "Print", then "Self-diagnosis log" when all DTC's are identified.
To code navigation control module:
- Select back arrow.
- Select diagnosis function "10-Adaptation".
- Enter values for adaptation channels 1, 2, 4, and 5, as follows:
Note:
All illustrations are sample screens and are for reference only! Please see Repair Manual, Radio, Telephone, Navigation (08D), Adaptation for respective model and adaptation values.
- Input "1" for "channel 1" on keypad.
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Bar graph shows selected channel and currently stored tire circumference in mm.
If value is correct:
- Press back arrow, then repeat step above to check adaptation values for channels 2, 4, and 5, and identify any incorrect values.
If value is incorrect:
- Press keyboard (arrow)
Channel 1, checking adaptation value
- Input tire circumference in mm, according to adaptation table for the specific model. See Repair Manual, Radio, Telephone, Navigation, OBD, Adaptation.
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Bar graph shows new tire circumference in mm.
- Press "Save" (arrow) to save channel 1 value.
- Press back arrow.
Channel 2, checking adaptation value
- Input "2" for "channel 2" on keypad.
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Bar graph shows selected channel and current pulse number for wheel rotation. If value is correct:
- Press back arrow, then repeat step above to check adaptation values for channels 4 and 5, and identify any incorrect values.
If value is incorrect:
- Press keyboard (arrow).
- Input correct pulse number per wheel rotation according to adaptation table for the specific model (See Repair Manual).
- Press "Q" on keypad to confirm.
- Bar graph shows new pulse number per wheel rotation.
- Press back arrow.
Channels 4 and 5, checking adaptation values
- Repeat above steps to verify and change adaptation values for channels 4 and 5, if necessary, until incorrect value is found.
When all adaptation values have been checked and/or corrected:
- Select "Go to" on navigation bar, then select "Exit".
- Switch ignition OFF.
- Remove VAS 5051 Diagnostic tool.
