Transmission, Removing



Transmission, removing (vehicles with 1.8 L turbo engine, also Cabriolet), 01J, CVT A/T FWD

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required:





^ Engine support bridge 10-222 A
^ Pry lever-RMV outside mirror 80-200
^ Transmission support 3282
^ Template 3282/30
^ Engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A

Insert pad for front fender T40045:





Work procedure





- Place selector lever in position "P".

CAUTION: Observe safety precautions with disconnecting battery.





- Slide cover over battery to the right -arrow 1- and pull upward -arrow 2-.





- With ignition switched off, disconnect Battery Ground (GND) strap -arrow-.





- Remove engine cover -arrows-.
- Remove sealing rubber at bolted flanges of fender.





- To prevent damage to bolted flanges of fender when using engine support bridge 10-222 A, insert insert pad for front fender T40045 on both sides between bolted flange of fender and web plate lying beneath.
- Position engine support bridge 10-222 A onto bolted flange of fenders; spindle stands at rear.
- Expose rear lifting eye on engine.
- Engage hook on spindle into rear lifting eye on engine.





- Pre-tension engine slightly using spindle on engine support bridge.
- Remove both front wheels.





- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts - arrows - for exhaust pipe of parking heater/auxiliary heater on sound insulation.





- Remove bolts or quick-release fasteners -1 to 3- and remove front and rear sound insulation.





- Remove bracket for sound insulation -arrows-.





- Remove cover plates on underside of vehicle: inside left -2- and inside right -1-.





- Remove bolts -1 to 4- and remove rear crossmember on underside of vehicle.





- Remove bolts -1 to 6- and remove front crossmember on underside of vehicle.

Note:
^ The flex pipe in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 100, otherwise it may be damaged.

- Disconnect exhaust system at double clamp -arrows-.





- Remove heat shield for exhaust system.
- Place plunger of engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with a block of wood -1- under transmission.





- Support tunnel crossmember using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.

CAUTION: The lock carrier must be installed - risk of injury.

- First unscrew bolts -1- and -2-, then bolts -3- and -4-.





- Slowly lower tunnel crossmember using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.





- Remove nuts -arrows- and remove tunnel crossmember.
- Remove heat shield -1- for right drive axle.





- Remove drive axle from transmission flange on left and right sides.
- Remove front exhaust pipe bracket -1-.
- Remove bolts front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter -arrows-.

Note:
^ The flex pipe in the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 100, otherwise it may be damaged.

- Remove front exhaust pipe.





Note:
^ Observe rules for cleanliness when working on the automatic transmission go to Rules for cleanliness.

- Place a drip tray underneath transmission.
- Remove union nuts -1- and -2- and disconnect ATF lines.
- Unbolt bracket for ATF-lines -arrows-.





- Remove ATF filter from transmission - arrows -.





- Remove union nuts -1- and -2- and disconnect ATF lines.
- Unbolt bracket for ATF-lines -arrows-.





- Remove bolt -arrow- and disconnect ATF-lines from transmission.
- Disconnect ATF lines.

For transmission with right-angled connector:





- Disconnect harness connector -A- in direction of -arrow- and disconnect it from transmission.
- Move wiring harness clear.

For transmission with round connector:





- Disconnect electrical harness connector -1- and disconnect from transmission.
- Move wiring harness clear -arrows-.

All:





- Remove bolts -2- and remove bracket -3- for selector lever cable.





- Using pry lever-rmv outside mirror 80-200, press selector lever cable -A- from selector shaft lever -arrow-.





- Remove bolts -2- and remove transmission support -1- from transmission.





- Remove bolts -1 to 5- and -11- on engine/transmission flange.
- Loosen bolt -Item 6- only and then tighten by hand.

Note:
^ Starter must not be removed.

- Install transmission support 3282 onto engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.





- Set template 3282/30 on to transmission support 3282 (template only installs in one position).
- Align transmission support arms to correspond with holes in template.

- Bolt attachments as labeled on template.





- Move engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A with transmission mount 3282 under transmission and support transmission.

Note:
^ Arrow symbol on template points in the direction of travel.

- Align template parallel to transmission and secure to transmission using a bolt M10 x 20 -arrow-.

Cabriolet:

Note:
^ On Cabriolet vehicles the following additional steps are required in order to remove the four bottom engine/transmission bolts:

- Raise transmission slightly using engine/transmission jack V.A.G 1383 A.





- Unbolt torque support -arrows-.





- Remove left and right nuts -1- and swing stabilizer bar -2- downward.
- Unscrew nuts -3- at engine mount on left and right far enough until lower edge of nut is flush with threaded pin -arrow-
- Raise engine using engine support bridge 10-222 A far enough until both nuts -3- (on left and right sides) make contact on console from below.





All models
- Remove bolts -7 to 10- on engine/transmission flange.

Cabriolet
- Lower engine again.

All models
- Slowly lower transmission again.
- Tie up drive axles.
- Remove last engine/transmission mounting bolt.
- Press off transmission from bushings and let it down carefully.
