WARNING:
For certain procedures involving components of passive restraint system e.g. airbag. Ignition must be left ON (with engine OFF) while disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. These procedures will include the WARNING statement: "Contrary to description under Battery, disconnecting and reconnecting, battery MUST BE disconnected to remove airbag with ignition switched ON"

For vehicles with an electronic ignition switch, the battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched ON because Access/Start Control Module -J518- must receive and maintain the last known electronic state/signal sent from Access/Start Authorization Switch -E415-.

This condition is not possible if -E415- is not powered (i.e.: battery has already been disconnected). Disconnecting the battery with the -E415- switched ON is the only way to fulfill the requirement that the ignition be switched ON prior to reconnecting the battery.

The purpose is to have the electrical system act as a buffer to minimize any voltage spikes that could inadvertently deploy an Airbag component.

WARNING:
Always refer to the appropriate repair manual in regards to servicing any airbag component.
