DO NOT replace the Battery Energy Manager. A8 and A8L models equipped with BEM software version 270 or lower cannot be updated to a higher software version.

^ No malfunctions of software versions 270 or lower have been reported for A8 and A8L.

- Using the VAS 5051/5052 diagnostic tool, verify BEM software version of vehicle (arrow).

If vehicle is an A8 or A8L model equipped with software version 270 or lower:

- DO NOT proceed with this bulletin. Refer to Guided Fault Finding in the VAS 5051/5052 to continue diagnosis.

If vehicle is an A6 model, or an A8, A8L model equipped with software version 271 or higher:

- Update (Flash) software of the BEM using the applicable Update CD (see table) and the VAS 5051/5052 Diagnostic tool.

Procedure:

Update - Programming (Flashing)

Note:
When performing the update programming (flashing) procedure, ALL DTCs for all Systems are erased.

DTCs linked to Guided Fault Finding function tests will be lost. Therefore, always address stored DTCs for Customer concerns unrelated to the reflash procedure first.

Tool requirements:

^ VAS 5051 or 5052 (with Basis CD V07.00 and Brand CD V.07.36.00 or higher) with old diagnosis logs erased prior to start.

^ "Update - Programming" (flashing) CD, either Part No: 4F0 906 961 K or Part No: 4E0 906 961 G.

^ Approved battery charger.

Tip:

The battery MUST have a minimum no-load charge of 12.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to ECM failure). Use approved battery charger to battery voltage.

Tip

Additional copies of the "Update - Programming" CDs (Part No: 4F0 906 961 k or Part No: 4E0 906 961 G) may be ordered from the Audi Technical Literature Ordering Center.

Updating Battery Energy Manager Via Update CD:

Note
An ignition OFF / ON cycle will be required when prompted. However, DO NOT cycle the ignition while the software is loading.

If you experience any problems, please reference the file under \\Manual\GB.pdf on the update CD (insert CD into CD-ROM drive of any Computer) or contact the Audi Helpline.
