Service Part 1
Customers do not need to be directly informed of the service campaign. Please ensure that all affected vehicles are checked and repaired during a service visit. You should also pass on this information to your used car sales department so that the vehicles within the affected range can be checked and repaired before sale.Electronic Parking Brake Control Module Software must be updated to 220 (or higher)
^ Vehicle requirements: Battery MUST have minimum no-load charge of 12.5V (failure to maintain voltage during update process can lead to Control Module failure). Minimize any voltage draw to vehicle (radio, and other accessories switched OFF, apply Emergency brake to switch running lights OFF if applicable). Make sure that no electromagnetic sources (mobile phone or cordless DECT telephone) are operated in or near the vehicle while the individual control module is being updated.
- Connect -VAS 5051B- or -VAS 5052- to your VAS 5052 workshop network.
If using VAS 5052:
- Insert the Update CD, TRW No. YWB 4002A in the CD drive of the tester.
If using VAS 5051B:
- Insert the Update CD, TRW No. YWB 4002B in the Guided Fault CD drive of the tester.
- Select "Applications".
- Select "Start application from CD ROM".

^ Press the "Next" button (>).
Tip:
^ If you press the red button (<), this will cancel the complete program. It is not possible to go one step back to the previous window.
^ Press the green 'Next' button (>) to advance to the next step in the program.

^ Pull the control switch for the parking brake. The EPB warning lamps in the switch and in the instrument cluster will light up.
^ Press the "Next" button (>).
- Switch off the ignition.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Take out the ignition key.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Open the fuse box cover at the side of the dash panel (drivers side).
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Pull out the bridge connector.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Connect red connector of adapter cable TRW No. YWB 4001 to connector at side of dash panel.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Connect yellow connector of adapter cable TRW No. YWB 4001 to diagnostic socket of vehicle.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Connect black connector of adapter cable TRW No. YWB 4001 to diagnostic connector of original cable from tester.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
If there is no battery voltage at the diagnostic connector:
If no battery voltage is detected by VAS 5051B or VAS 5052:
- Check all connections.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
Continue in program
- Wait until warning lamp in EPB switch goes out.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
Note:
You may have to wait for up to 3 minutes.
- Insert the key into the ignition and switch on the ignition.
Note:
You do not have to press the "Next" button (>); the program will continue automatically.
If the tester is not able to establish communication with any of the on-board control units:
If VAS 5051B or VAS 5052 is not able to establish communication with any of the control units:
- Check all connections.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
If the existing software in the EPB control unit is OK:
If this screen display appears, a software update is not required.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
If there are faults stored in the EPB control unit:
If the screen shows this display, the EPB control unit has registered one or more faults:
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Repair the faults as described in the Workshop Manual and then perform the software update again.
Note:
Do NOT replace the EPB control unit if the fault "16347 Control unit defective" is stored in the memory of the EPB control unit. This fault will be rectified by the software update.
Continue in program
- Switch off the ignition.
Note:
You do not have to press the "Next" button (>); the program will continue automatically.
If the tester is not able to establish communication with the EPB control unit:
If the tester is not able to set up a connection with the EPB control unit within one minute:
- Remove the fuses for the EPB control unit (on right side of luggage compartment).
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Insert the fuses again.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Switch on the ignition.
Note:
You do not have to press the "Next" button (>); the program will continue automatically.
- Switch off the ignition.

Continue in program
- Take out the ignition key.
- Press the "Next" button (>).
- Insert the key into the ignition again and switch on the ignition.

When the tester has successfully established a connection with the EPB control unit it will perform the first part of the software update ("Bootloader").
- Switch off the ignition.
