November 21, 2008.
Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 01 number 06-06 dated June 1, 2006 for reasons listed below.
Affected Vehicles
20 A8/A8L False Warning Message Indicating Missing Fuel Cap
Condition
Fuel cap detection system fails to recognize properly installed fuel cap. The symptom of this issue is a persistent warning message present on the instrument cluster indicating a missing/loose fuel cap.
Additionally, due to the absence of a tether strap from the fuel door to the cap, the cap can easily be dropped or lost. Either situation can result in MIL activation and may create a nuisance for the customer.
Technical Background
Production Solution
All models from VIN 4E_6N003536 and above have improved fuel cap.
Service
To address both issues, the existing fuel cap will be replaced with part 4E0 201 550B. This part includes a tether strap, so the cap detection system is no longer necessary. Therefore, the fuel cap detection will be deactivated via coding of the Central Control Module for the Comfort System.
Note:
Fuel cap 4E0 201 550B is not compatible with the fuel cap detection system, therefore the system must be disabled via Central Control Module for Comfort System coding.
Fuel Cap Replacement:
- Remove existing fuel cap.
- Attach strap anchor to fuel door hinge by inserting the anchor through the top of the anchor hole shown in figure 4.
- Install the new fuel cap.
Change Coding of the Central Control Module for the Comfort System to remove fuel cap detection:
- Connect the VAS 5052 tool to the vehicle.
- Select appropriate vehicle configuration.
- Select: Guided Functions >> System 46 - Central control module for comfort system >> J393 - Central ctrl.mo.comfort.sys., coding (RG.57) >>
- Enter the J393 coding by selecting the arrow-forward button and then doing so again at the next prompt.
- On the first page of the test plan, follow the directions and select "Done".
- Select: "2" to change the coding >> "1" to generate the coding automatically.
- Read and follow the instructions and select "Done".
- Select appropriate choice for: rear lid equipment >> steering equipment >> rear blind equipment >> foot-well lighting equipment >>.
- Select "No" for the fuel tank cap detection option.
- Verify equipment selections.
- Select "1" to accept coding changes.
- The coding change is complete. Exit Guided Functions and shut down the VAS 5052 normally.
- Verify the proper execution of the changes by starting the vehicle and placing the transmission in drive while looking for the fuel cap detection message on the instrument cluster.
- If no message appears with the new cap installed, the changes have been correctly carried out and are complete.
