Air Duct in Vehicle

The ventilation of the passenger compartment occurs via two air extraction outlets (in luggage compartment right and left near the bumper). Refer to => [ Vent Frame, Checking ] A/C System Control and Regulation Components.

The following figure shows an instrument panel as installed in a sedan or Avant up to VIN "399999" of model year 2005. The form of the instrument panel in a Cabrio, sedan, or Avant starting with VIN "400000 " of model year 2005 (in the Sedan and Avant) and "012913" of model year 2005 (Cabrio) deviates slightly from this figure.

1 - Defroster vent

For front windshield

Removing and installing, Refer to => Interior Moulding / Trim Interior Moulding / Trim

If the Intermediate piece between air conditioner and air duct in the instrument panel has been pinched during installation, the air guide to the front windshield is uneven or insufficient.

Different versions of the sunlight photo sensor ( G107) in vehicles up to VIN "399999" and starting with VIN "400000" of model year 2005 (in Sedan and Avant) and to " 012912" or starting with "012913" of model year 2005 (Cabrio).

8 - Defroster channel intermediate piece

Removing and installing, refer to => [ Windshield Defroster Vent Intermediate Piece ] Instrument Panel Vents and Air Ducts

9 - Fresh air intake

The air is taken in via the dust and pollen filter which is installed in the plenum chamber.

10 - Recirculating air intake

The air is extracted under the glove compartment out of the passenger's side footwell.

Air Duct in A/C Unit

The sectional view of the A/C unit shows the flaps in the "air to footwell" position and the "cooling" temperature setting (no air through the heat exchanger for heating).

A - Driver side

B - Passenger side

C - Intake of passenger compartment air (recirculation mode)

Via the footwell on the passenger side

D - Fresh air intake

Via the dust and pollen filter installed in the plenum chamber

E - To the vents to the windshield (passenger side)

The air from the center defroster vent comes from both sides of the A/C unit. Its temperature is determined by the mixture ratio depending on which temperature settings are set on the Climatronic control module (J255) A/C control head.

F - To the vents to the windshield (driver side)

The air from the center defroster vent comes from both sides of the A/C unit. Its temperature is determined by the mixture ratio depending on which temperature settings are set on the Climatronic control module (J255) A/C control head.

G - To the instrument panel vents on the driver side

H - To the front footwell vents on the driver side

J - To the instrument panel vents in the center

The air from these vents comes from both sides of the A/C unit. Its temperature is determined by the mixture ratio depending on which flaps are open or closed and which temperature settings are set on the Climatronic control module (J255) A/C control head.

K - To the rear footwell vent on the driver side

L - To the rear footwell vent on the passenger side

M - To the front passenger footwell vent

1 - Fresh Air Blower (V2)

With Fresh Air Blower Control Module (J126)

2 - Recirculated air door

Shown in "closed" position

3 - Fresh air flaps

Shown in "open" position

Both flaps are operated independently by the cam plate attached to the control motor and the actuating arm.

4 - Defroster door

Shown in "closed" position

Both flaps are operated together via levers attached to the outside of the air distribution housing and connecting elements.

5 - Central flap "1"

Shown in "closed" position

As a result of the shape of the two outside flaps, air can flow to the left and right vents when the center flap is closed.

Both central flaps are operated independently by the cam plate attached to the control motor and the actuating arm.

6 - Central flap "2"

Shown in the "open" position, air to the footwell vents

Both central flaps are operated independently by the cam plate attached to the control motor and the actuating arm.

7 - Auxiliary Air Heater Heating Element (Z35)

- Not applicable for USA

8 - Heat exchanger for heater unit

9 - Temperature flaps "2"

One flap per driver and passenger side.

Shown in "cooling" position

The temperature flaps "2" are operated by the connecting elements of temperature flaps "1" installed in the air distributor housing => [ Connecting Elements between Temperatures Doors 1 and 2 ].

10 - Temperature flaps "1"

Shown in the "cooling" position

One flap per driver and passenger side.

11 - Evaporator
