Speech Dialog System - Change Language

Speech Dialog System (SDS): Change language for voice recognition

91 06 38 Dec. 21, 2006, 2013503/1

Condition
Customer may wish to change the language in the MMI speech dialogue system (SDS) from English to French or vice versa.

Technical Background
It is not possible to switch from one language to the other via coding or adaptation channel selection. Due to the limited memory in the control unit, only one language is stored. If a language change is requested, the SDS control unit has to be reprogrammed.

Production Solution
Not applicable.

Service

Tip:
Please inform the customer that after changing the language of the speech dialogue system, the name tags (for radio stations, CDs and directory entries) allocated by the user will no longer be usable. If necessary they can be deleted in the MMI using the menu options Setup Settings Speech dialogue system>> Delete all name tags. (See Operating Manual.)

1. Connect an approved battery charger to the designated battery studs to maintain the vehicle battery charge during the programming of the SDS control unit.
2. Switch on the MMI system.
3. Take all CDs out of the CD player, if necessary.
4. Insert the MMI Update CD 4E0 906 961 R into the first slot of the CD changer or the CD player with the label facing up. Wait at least 10 seconds to allow the system to analyze the MMI flash CD.
5. Activate the radio menu by pressing the Radio function selector button.
6. First press Setup and then Return and hold both buttons down simultaneously for about 5 seconds until the display changes.

7. Activate the SW update via the bottom right control button, located next to the rotary pushbutton.

8. Activate the update from the CD-ROM by pressing the rotary pushbutton.

9. Wait for 20 seconds while the Meta information is being read.

10. Select and confirm Standard with the rotary pushbutton.

11. Using the rotary pushbutton, select and confirm SDS D3 in the list that now appears.

12. Select and activate the menu option Select language.

13. Select and activate the desired language (englishus or french) by pressing the rotary push button. A checkmark will appear after the selected language.

14. Press Return twice to go back to the list of devices. SDS D3 will now be marked with a Y.

15. Using the rotary push button, select and confirm Start download at the bottom of the menu.

16. If applicable, read the message that now appears. Then select and confirm the option OK at the end of the list using the rotary pushbutton. (This only appears in conjunction with a bootloader update of a component.)

A message may appear warning you of possible damage to control units. In this case, you can ignore this message.

17. The update programming will now change the system to the desired language.

18. The display automatically shows Start applications when update programming is complete. Please wait until the listed devices have been initialized.

19. After you have completed the changes to the language setting, select Restart MMI (at the end of the list) and activate your selection with the rotary pushbutton.

20. Switch the MMI system off, wait for ten seconds and then switch it back on again.
21. The infotainment functions will only be fully functional after a delay of 3-15 minutes after switching the MMI off and on again. The new language undergoes internal processing during this time.
22. The language change for the speech dialogue system is completed when the system responds with a beep tone after pressing the talk button (PTT) on the steering wheel. (MMI must be switched on.)
23. You can then switch the MMI off again.

NOTE: If the vehicle is equipped with a navigation system, you will also have to change the language for the voice guidance cues.

24. A Software Version Management (SVM) Update has to be performed after the programming. Use the appropriate SVM code, which is printed on the label of Update CD 4E0 906 961 R.

For A8, use NA4EK621. For A6, use NA4FK621. For Audi Q7, use NA4LK621.
