Condition
Customer may complain of a creaking or squeaking noise from the steering column when steering slowly. The noise may get louder at higher temperatures or with longer drive time.
The noise comes from the sealing sleeve/steering column opening on the bulkhead.
Unlike noises from the steering rack, the creaking can be reproduced when the engine is switched off. When steering around the center of the steering range, a creaking can be heard.
Technical Background
Incorrect installation or poor lubrication.
The condition can result in a noise from the steering column area, but this condition has no affect on the steering system's function.
Production Solution
Installation process improved.
Service
1. Check the position of the sealing sleeve on the engine side. If the sealing sleeve is not completely installed, modify it accordingly.
2. From the footwell, check to ensure that the foam ring is installed correctly and does not chafe on the barcode label.
3. From the footwell, check to ensure that the white bearing ring is installed correctly. If the bearing ring has slipped out of the sealing sleeve, the intermediate steering shaft must be replaced.
4. If the sealing sleeve is correctly installed but there are still creaking noises, grease the intermediate steering shaft in the area of the bearing ring (white) with special lubricant G 052 172 A1. Spread the lubricant by slightly rotating the sealing sleeve.
