Evaporator Drain Tube: Testing and Inspection

Checking and Cleaning Plenum Chamber Water Drain

The draining of water from the plenum chamber may be impaired by deposits (leaves, various tree needles, etc.) accumulating in the plenum chamber water drains - arrows - and in the grommets - 1 - with a valve. The water level in the plenum chamber then rises if the vehicle is taken to an automatic car wash or in the event of heavy rain, water enters via the intake duct into the A/C unit and is blown by the fresh air blower onto the evaporator together with the conveyed air.

The water drains - arrows - and the grommets - 1 - with a valve for water drainage on the driver side are shown with the brake booster removed.

If the water drains - arrows - and/or grommets - 1 - with a valve are blocked by leaves and pine needles, it may cause the drains to freeze up in winter so that water can no longer drain out. After a short drive, heat emitted from engine and exhaust system melts the ice in the drains again and water may drain off again before vehicle arrives at the workshop.

In the case of a damaged or incorrectly installed cowl panel trim - 2 - and/or plenum chamber cover - 1 -, water can flow into the fresh air intake duct. As a result, the heating/A/C system can emit an odor and/or moisture can occur in the passenger compartment.

Procedure

- Remove the plenum chamber cover.

Use a commercially available and illuminated endoscope for example, to check the water drains that are difficult to reach. It is best to use one that has a flexible waterproof head.

Use a commercially available flexible gripping tool to clean, for example, coarse dirt from difficult to reach water drains. Then wash out the any remaining contaminates.

Driver side

- Remove the e-box plenum chamber.

- Check the water drains - arrows - for contamination.

The water must be able to drain.

- Clean dirty water drains.

- Check the grommet - 1 - with a valve for dirt and proper functioning.

The valve of the grommet must not be stuck or plugged by dirt.

- Clean the stuck or dirty grommet with a valve.

Shown in the figure with the brake booster removed.

Passenger side

- Check the water drains - arrows - for contamination.

The water must be able to drain.

- Clean dirty water drains.

- Check the grommet - 1 - with a valve for dirt and proper functioning.

The valve of the grommet must not be stuck or plugged by dirt.

- Clean the stuck or dirty grommet with a valve.

Continuation for both sides of the vehicle

- If a grommet - 2 - is damaged, it must be replaced by pulling the grommet out of the body cut-out - 1 -.

- Insert a new grommet in the body cut-out and check the water drain.

The valve of the grommet must not be stuck and the water must drain.

If the water still will not drain in the area of the grommets, remove the heat shield for the upper tunnel and clean the area around the grommet.

- Install the e-box plenum chamber.

- Install the plenum chamber cover.
