Night Vision System: Description and Operation
Night Vision System
The night vision system assists the driver when driving at night. The night vision system displays a thermal image of the area around the vehicle. The range of the night vision system exceeds the range of the low beam or high beam by approximately 300 meters (328 yards). When it is totally dark outside, a living creature will appear in the image due to their body temperature. The system recognizes a pedestrian 13 to 90 meters (14 to 98 yards) away from the vehicle and marks this in yellow brackets. The system then calculates a warning range using the current vehicle speed and yaw rate. Should a pedestrian be in or step into the warning range, the system warns of a possible collision with the pedestrian. The color of the brackets that are marking the pedestrian changes to red and a gong sounds.
The night vision system consists of a camera and a control module. The night vision camera button is integrated inside the rotary light switch. The camera is located in the radiator grille in the outer Audi ring on the left side of the vehicle. The night vision system control module (J853) is located on the left side of the vehicle inside the footwell. The camera is a subsystem of the control module and diagnostic-capable via the control module. Should there be a fault, the camera and the control module can be replaced separately. There is a repair kit available for the camera in case it gets damaged by a stone chip or scratch, etc. The kit contains a lens, a seal, the quick-lock, 2 swabs for cleaning the sealing area and instructions.
• If the protective window is damaged and is no longer waterproof, replace the entire night vision system camera (R212). Refer to => [ Night Vision Camera ] Night Vision Camera.
A spray nozzle cleans the camera window. The spray nozzle is coupled to the headlamp washer system.
The camera must be calibrated correctly for the night vision system to work properly.
Calibration is Necessary if:
• "No or incorrect basic setting/adaptation" is stored actively in the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memory.
• The camera was removed or replaced,
• The bumper or the radiator grille was removed or replaced,
• Adjustments were made on the rear axle,
• Parts of the suspension were replaced on the vehicle.
A calibration is not necessary after changes that affect the night vision system control module (J853) are made (replacement, software updates).
• Before calibrating the night vision system, check the DTC memory and correct any faults if necessary. The dynamic steering must only be calibrated using alignment equipment approved by VW/Audi. Use only setting device (VAS 6430) or setting device basic set VAS6430/1 (VAS 6430/1) with the calibration plate for the night vision system (VAS 6430/6) to calibrate the night vision system.
