SUBJECT:
IHKR Blower Resistor Assembly Failure

MODELS:
E36 (prior to 9/91 production)

Situation:
A complaint is received such as blower speeds inoperative or intermittent fan output on fan speed settings 1, 2, or 3.

Cause:
The support plate of the blower resistor block can heat up, causing an increase in resistance to the thermal switch. As a result, the switch heats up even more and eventually opens. The unit has been redesigned, and orients the thermal switch 180 degrees in position as compared to the older style. Refer to illustration.

Correction:
If one of the above complaints is experienced, replace the blower resistor unit.

This shortcoming has been fixed in production for 9/91 and later vehicles. BMW NA will purge its stock of the older units.

Note that the unit is best accessed from inside the vehicle. The blower resistor is located on the left side of the blower housing, above the driver's footwell.
