SUBJECT:
Poor AM Radio Reception - Antenna Wire Cut
MODELS:
E36
Situation:
Several vehicles have been discovered spanning production from 5/91 to
2/92 that have the AM antenna wire cut or pinched. Any E36 vehicle with extremely poor AM reception is suspect.
Cause:
This wire connects the AM antenna grid on the rear glass to the antenna amplifier in the driver's side C-pillar. In some poor routing situations, the metal clips on the C-pillar cover trim cut or pinch this antenna lead. This assembly error may cause an open or short to ground, and significantly reduces AM reception quality.
Solution:
Repair or replace the wire as necessary. Make certain any repairs are well insulated. Before replacing C-pillar trim, route the antenna wire away from the clip hole and secure with tape.
