SUBJECT: Knee Bolster Recall Campaign No. 91V-054

MODELS: 1991 318i


Situation: BMW AG has determined that certain 1991 model year 318i automobiles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208.


BMW has determined that the driver's side knee bolster may interfere with the lower steering column trim cover during a severe frontal impact, if the driver is unbelted. This interference may prevent the steering column from moving forward as designed to absorb impact energy and therefore may increase the degree of injury in such an impact.
