RE: Recall Campaign No. 91V-054

Dear BMW Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

BMW AG has determined that certain 1991 model year BMW 318i automobiles fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208.

DESCRIPTION OF NONCOMPLIANCE

BMW has determined that the driver-side knee bolster may interfere with the lower steering column trim cover during a severe frontal impact, if the driver is unbelted. This interference may prevent the steering column from moving forward as designed to absorb impact energy and therefore may increase the degree of injury in such an impact.

PRECAUTIONS

1. CONTACT YOUR AUTHORIZED BMW DEALER IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE THE NECESSARY INSPECTION/REPAIR PERFORMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

2. ALWAYS wear your safety belt and insure that all passengers are properly restrained at all times.

DESCRIPTION OF REPAIR

The repair will consist of modifying the knee bolster so that it will not interfere with forward movement of the steering column in the event of a severe frontal crash.

This repair will require approximately 1/2 hour and will be performed by your Authorized BMW Dealer free of charge.
