SUBJECT:
Throttle Housing Recall Campaign No. 91V-219

MODEL:
1991-92 E30 with M42 engine

Situation:
BMW of North America has voluntarily initiated a recall campaign which involves the throttle housing of the affected vehicles.

The 1991-92 318i models are equipped with a crankcase ventilation system that is verified into the intake system of the engine at the bellows boot ahead of the throttle housing.

Under conditions of low ambient temperature (15~F and colder) and a warmed-up engine, water vapor in the warm air from the crankcase night condense and freeze in the colder bellows boot after a period of driving, dislodge and move into the throttle housing, where it could prevent the throttle plate from fully closing when the driver releases the gas pedal, causing a slower than normal deceleration rate and an increase in the idle speed.
