Sodium-Filled Valves - Handling/Disposal

90bmw09 Group 11 Engine
Bulletin Number 11 06 90 (3060)
Woodcliff Lake, NJ May 1990 Service Engineering
SUBJECT: Sodium-Filled Valves

Engine: All so equipped

Situation: Sodium-filled valves, as introduced on the M42 (318is), should be given the same care and concern afforded any other BMW engine part. During transportation, storage and handling, all engine parts should be kept in their original packaging and never subjected to impact or severe mishandling. These guidelines are also true for sodium-filled valves.

Disposal: Sodium-filled valves should not be scrapped in the usual way with other used metal auto parts and should not be tampered with.

The internal sodium (Na) content within the valve stem could produce a reaction depending on the treatment received in the scrapping process.

Used sodium-filled valves must be shipped to the BMW NA Warranty Parts Return Center in the original valve packaging.

This applies to all sodium-filled valves whether replaced under warranty or not. The WPRC will then forward the valves to BMW AG where disposal will be carried out using approved procedures.

Warning: If used valves are mishandled or subjected to severe Impact (e.g., used as a drift, etc.) personal injury may result.
