SUBJECT:
Door Closing Effort

MODELS:
E36

Situation:
Due to the design of the door seals on the E36, door closing effort may seem to be too high on a new car. This is because the new seals have not yet settled to their final shape, which can take approximately four weeks of normal use.

If the door or strikers are adjusted to lower the closing effort before the seals have taken their final shape, the sealing will become inadequate over time leading to increased noise levels and possible leaks.

Action:
All involved dealer personnel should be made aware of the design of the door seals and the need to allow the seals to settle to their final shape. This especially applies to sales personnel who can make the customer aware of the fact that the required door closing effort will be reduced as the seals settle in.

Proper door alignment and adjustment should be maintained, and all concerned personnel should familiarize themselves with the correct alignment requirements as outlined in the E36 Repair Manual, section 41-51.
