This Service Information bulletin supersedes S.I. 72 04 91 (3388) dated October 1991, which should be removed from your S.I. binder and discarded. This bulletin adds information on Belt Tensioner Flash Codes.

SUBJECT:
Pyrotechnic Safety Belt Tensioner for Convertible

MODELS:
1992/1993 Model Year E30 (318iC, 325iC) Convertible

Situation:
As of 10/91 production, the E30 Convertibles are fitted with a pyrotechnic safety belt tensioner on the passenger side only. The Repair Manual omits the flash code for the pyrotechnic safety belt tensioner. The flash code 4-2-3 is for the passenger side pyrotechnic safety belt tensioner.

Correction:
If the 4-2-3 flash code is encountered, the electrical connections should be checked. If there are no electrical problems found, the tensioner unit is either deployed or defective and must be replaced. No attempt should be made to disassemble or service the tensioner unit.

Parts Information:
The following part numbers should be used when replacing this equipment.
