This Service Information Bulletin supersedes S.I. 62 04 91 (3245), dated August 1991. It incorporates additional information concerning the resetting of the Service Interval Indicator.

Please remove and discard S.I. 62 04 91 (3245), dated August 1991 from your S.I. binder.

SUBJECT:
"Inspection" Light in Service Indicator Comes On with One or More Green LEDs still Illuminated

MODELS:
All 318iAs/iC (E30), equipped with M42 engine

Situation:
The Service Indicator in the above mentioned vehicles may display one or more green LEDs in conjunction with an illuminated "Inspection" light.

Resetting the Service Indicator extinguishes the "Inspection" light, but does not restore the green LEDs to a full (five LED) display. A second reset will restore all five green LEDS, but should not be performed.

To avoid confusion, please read the "Procedure" portion of this bulletin in its entirety before performing this Service Action.

The vehicles affected are M42 equipped E30 models, produced prior to May 1991.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle in this range is affected by the Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to item # 6 "Vehicle History Inquiry" and enter the chassis number (last seven) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges, but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision factor is the DSC inquiry.

Vehicles
Affected:
Model Chassis Number Ranges

318is EE65001 - EE74734

318i/4 EJ00000 - EJ06728

318iC EJ10004 - EJ11871

Cause:
Incorrect data in the Instrument Cluster Coding Plug activates an "Annual" Inspection program.

Correction:
Replace coding plug.

Implementation:
This important preventative repair is vital in our combined effort to ensure BMW customer satisfaction. Your support and cooperation in this Service Action is highly appreciated.

Please review your records and contact those customers whose vehicles are in the above mentioned chassis number range and which have not had this Service Action performed. Further, all vehicles in dealer inventory should receive this quick update prior to retail sale (i.e., PDI, used vehicle reconditioning , etc.).

Procedure:
1. Visually inspect the coding plug tab from the front of the Instrument Cluster with the aid of a mirror. The identification number of the coding plug (P/N 62 11 1 394 321) should be 23, and the affected vehicles have a coding plug that is white in color.

Important Note:
If the "Inspection" light is illuminated in conjunction with one or more green LEDS, reset the Service Indicator "Inspection" light one time only. Do not reset a second time, as this would now reset the mileage related inspection, and put the vehicle's maintenance out of schedule. Perform the reset before replacing the coding plug.

Use the 20-pin S.I. Resetting Tool (P/N 88 88 6 621 110) only. Do not use the 15-pin S.I. Resetting Tool (P/N 88 88 6 621 100) with 15-to-20 Pin Adaptor (P/N 88 88 6 621 140).

This resetting procedure will extinguish the "Inspection" light only. The green LEDs that remain indicate the mileage remaining until the mileagerelated inspection or oil service.

With the replacement of the coding plug, the Service Indicator data thus far accumulated is retained (in the Service Indicator Processor), but the "Annual" Inspection function is deleted.

2. Remove the Instrument Cluster Trim and replace the coding plug with a new coding plug (same part number and ID number, but blue in color). It is not necessary to remove entire instrument cluster, only the trim.

3. If the SI LEDs do not illuminate after performing this replacement, disconnect the vehicle's battery for approximately 10 minutes.

4. Reinstall the Instrument Cluster Trim.

5. Reconnect vehicle battery (if disconnected in Step 3).

Service Action
Label
Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 59. After the prescribed work has been performed, obtain a label (SD 89-006) and

A) Emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label;

B) Punch out code number 59 printed on the label; and

C) Bend label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar (on the driver's front door) as shown.

If the car already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix this label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched out hole of the new label.
