General Information
SUBJECT:BMW Remote Control Vehicle Security System (Alpine Alarm)
MODELS:
3 Series (E36) - All 1994 Models
Situation:
Certain wiring and software changes which took place with the introduction of the ZKE IV system (found on all 1994 model E36 vehicles) have created incompatibilities between these vehicles and the dealer-installed Alpine Alarm System (P/Ns 82 11 1 468 306 and 82 11 1 468 243). These incompatibilities can result in the following complaints:
1. Drivers window drops approximately 1/4" when the engine is cranked and then immediately returns to the fully closed position.
2. The left rear door is not monitored by the alarm (four door vehicles only).
3. The vehicle may sporadically unlock itself immediately after doublelocking, even through the alarm remains armed.
Vehicles Affected:
All 1994 3 Series (E36) vehicles equipped with Alpine Alarm.
NOTE:
Please contact all of your customers with 1994 E36 vehicles into which you have installed a BMW Remote Control Vehicle Security System. Have these customers bring their vehicles in as soon as possible to have this campaign performed.
Correction:
For 1994 E36 vehicles already equipped with Alpine Alarm:
1. Install the 94 E36 Alarm Service Kit (P/N 82 11 1 468 754) as per the instructions in Repair Procedures.
2. Bridge the rear door switch wiring at the ZKE IV General Module as per the instructions in Install Procedures (4 door vehicles only).
NOTE:
The instructions also incorporate revised installation procedures regarding the hood protection circuit and siren mounting location.
The Alarm Service Kit (P/N 82 11 1 468 754) is only to be used for updating a previously installed alarm system. It does not contain parts necessary for a complete alarm installation.
A revised Alarm Installation Kit will be available for new installations within two weeks.
Parts Information:
Part Number Description Quantity
82 11 1 468 754 '94 E36 Alarm Service Kit 1
Dealers should order a small quantity of repair kits to repair vehicles into which an alarm has been installed. The alarm control module removed from the vehicle must be promptly returned to the Warranty Parts Return Center, using the green label provided and the original packing materials from the replacement module, in order to ensure a continuous flow of revised control modules. (An example of this label is enclosed.)
NOTE:
The Alpine Alarm Option Kit (P/N 82 11 1 468 243) must not be installed in 1994 E36 vehicles.
Use of this kit is restricted to any E32 or E34 vehicle, or to any 1992 or 1993 model E36 vehicle.
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 111. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 111 printed on the label (2); and
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
Warranty Information:
Parts and labor are reimbursable under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 Years/50,000 Miles.
It is absolutely essential that control modules are immediately returned before claim payment to the Warranty Parts Return Center utilizing the special green label. Failure to do so will result in a shortage of revised modules. The returned control module must have a manual part tag that includes Warranty Dealer Number, Claim Number and VIN or a legible copy of the repair order attached.
