Procedure 3
Checking under dash componentsRemove lower dash trim.
Remove knee bolster.
Check to see if the bolt (1) holding the knee bolster reinforcement bracket (2) is 80 mm long, with a spacer.
If there are two short bolts in this location, they must be replaced with an M8X80 bolt, part number 07 11 9 912 558, and a spacer, part number 32 31 1 161 882.
Install new bolt as per illustration.
Tighten bolt to 21.4 Nm.
Check the steering column covers to see if the new style covers are installed. The proper style upper cover can be visually identified by the cut line across the cover. The proper lower cover can be identified by the score marks on the inside (2), which can be easily felt with a finger tip. If either cover is not the proper type, replace both covers with part number 32 31 9 069 141.
Check to see if the steering column clamp has been installed. The tab on top of the clamp (1) should be flush up against the dimpled steel portion of the column, and the band of the clamp will be almost touching the aluminum lock housing.
If the clamp is not present, install part number 32 31 1 093 151, and lock into place with tool 323 020.
Note that the two plier jaws are shaped differently for directional use.
Make sure that the jaw with the roller type tip will be used against the locking tab of the clamp. Reversing the pliers will result in plier bending or damage.
Reinstall knee bolster and under dash trim.
