SUBJECT:
Initialization of E-M Convertible Top

MODELS:
325i Convertible (E36)

Situation:
The initialization procedure for the EM top of the 325i Convertible (E36) has been modified since the first training handouts were printed and the early training classes were held.

Please use the following procedure to reset and initialize the EM top. This information will be included in Repair Manual Number 5.

Procedure:
Lower the side windows and lower the top into the storage well. Close the storage lid and hold down the right side lid so that the safety switch is activated, allowing the trunk to be opened. Use caution when opening the trunk, that the trunk and storage lid do not make contact.

Remove the left side trunk trim to allow access to the motors. Re-engage the top drive motor. It may be necessary to open the storage lid slightly so that it does not contact the trunk lid, and move the top frame up and down so that the teeth on the motor can engage the transmission.

After the top drive motor is engaged, re-engage the lid lift motor. It may also be necessary to move the lid up and down to get the motor to engage the transmission.

Close the trunklid. Hold the top switch in the "Lower" position, turn the ignition switch to "R", and continue to hold the top switch down. After approximately ten seconds the lid will start to close and the switch can be released. Once the lid is fully closed the initialization run will complete in approximately five seconds.

If the initialization procedure must be stopped for any reason, it can only be interrupted by turning the ignition switch to "O".
