SUBJECT:
Squeaking from Convertible Top Seals

MODELS:
E36 Convertible

Situation:
Some E36 convertibles may exhibit a squeaking noise from the convertible top seals at points of contact with the doors and quarter windows, when the car is driven on rough or uneven surfaces. This is due to movements between the top and other body components.

New seals have been developed with a flocked coating to reduce the friction of the seal surface. These have been installed in production since mid-April 1994.

Correction:
In case of customer complaint on cars produced up to April 1994, replace the five convertible top seals with the version shown in the E36 Cabrio parts film as applying to vehicles produced from April 1994. The seals should not be installed dry, but must be lubricated with a light coat of petroleum jelly or BMW Rubber Care.

Warranty Status:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
