Headliner Plastic Panels Break
MODELS:
E36 Convertible
Situation:
The mounting strings for the soft top headliner can break out of their retainers in the plastic panels on each side of the headliner, which had necessitated the replacement of the entire headliner.
Replacement plastic panels are now available to repair headliners where the original panels have broken. In addition, the panels on production headliners have been strengthened and formed out of an improved grade of plastic as of 10/94 to prevent failures in the future.
Repair Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, unlatch and lift the top past the over-center point to release the tension on the headliner.
Release the metal eyes on the headliner strings so that they can be disconnected from the plastic panels. Do not remove the metal eyes from the top frame end.
Carefully peel the headliner material away from the plastic panels, so as to not rip the headliner material. Both panels should be replaced, even if only one is broken.
Install new panels, part number 54 31 8 211 902, using convertible top adhesive *(BMW number 81 22 9 407 524 until your stock is depleted, or 3M number 1357 High Performance Contact Adhesive).

Re-thread the headliner strings in the panels, and crimp the eyes in place. Allow the adhesive to dry for several hours before closing top.
