THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT:
Cruise Control Set Speed Drops Slightly
MODELS:
E36 (8/94-9/94 production 325is, 325iC, M3)
Situation:
Cruise control set speed drops slightly, immediately after setting speed. This may result in a 5-10 MPH slower set speed than what was desired.
Cause:
There is too much free play in the cruise control bowden cable. This play causes a delay in the cruise control actuator engagement while the actuator takes up the "slack." In most cases the bowden cable can be adjusted; however, a shorter bowden cable has been made available if adjustment to specification cannot be obtained.
Affected Vehicles:
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries", "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by this Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.
Model Chassis Number Ranges
325ie EF48901 - EF48938
325isA EK14801 - EK14842
325iC JC81450 - J081519
325iCA JD37700 - JD37837
M3 EH02150 - EH02358
Correction:
Check the amount of free play in the cruise control bowden cable. There should be a maximum of 2mm of play past the throttle lever. Measure the play by pulling out the mushroom head of the cable end and checking the distance from the tip to the edge of the white plastic saddle piece. Refer to the illustration below:
Procedure:
If the cable cannot be adjusted to 2 mm or less free play, the cruise control bowden cable must be replaced with a shorter cable, P/N 65 71 8 36 39 26.

Note:
The part number has not changed. BMW Parts has purged stock of the "longer" bowden cable.
Service Action Label Instructions: This Service Action has been assigned code number 133. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-050) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 133 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
