THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT:
B+ Lead in Engine Compartment
MODELS:
3 Series (E36) Vehicles Equipped with M50 Engine and ASC +1
Situation:
Due to the deletion of sound insulating covering at the brake booster, the B+ lead connected to the starter motor may come into contact with the brake booster on certain of the above mentioned vehicles.
Should the B+ lead contact the metal edge of the booster when the temperatures are high in the engine compartment, the insulation of the B+ lead could be damaged.
Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves 3 Series (E36) vehicles, equipped with M50 engine and ASC + T, produced in late January and early February 1994.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to Vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.
Correction:
When an affected vehicle (identified by DCS Inquiry) is next in the workshop, protect the B+ lead by installing a piece of corrugated tubing (P/N 12 42 9 067 568) around it in the affected area (see illustration). Secure the tubing with electrical tape, making sure that the ends of the tubing are securely fastened to the B+ lead.
Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 113. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-008) and:
a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b) punch out code number 113 printed on the label (2); and,
c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched~ut hole of the new label.
