THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Diagnostic Plug

MODELS:
3 Series (E36)

Situation:
On certain vehicles the receptacle for pin 19 (ground) in the Diagnostic Plug may have been spread open or pushed down.

If tolerances are unfavorable, this may lead to insufficient contact (or no contact at all) when test equipment is connected, without any indication that the ground is impaired. Effects of this impaired ground may include:

^ Impaired diagnostic capability when using the BMW Service Tester, MoDiC, or DIS.

^ Faulty programming when installing a new Engine Control Module (DME M3.X) for M50 and S50 engines.

^ Resetting of Service Indicator is incorrect or impossible.

^ Insufficient protection against interference voltage, due to loss of contact at the grounding bridge in the cap for the diagnostic plug.

^ Incorrect display of engine speed (or none at all) when testing the signal at the diagnostic plug.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves 3 Series (E36) vehicles produced 10/93 to 12/93.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" " Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
When an affected vehicle (identified by DCS inquiry) is in the workshop, check the position of pin 19 in diagnostic plug and correct, if necessary, by the following procedure.

Procedure:
- Remove cover from diagnostic socket.

- Carry out visual check to find out if pin receptacle No. 19 is positioned as high as other pin receptacles (see illustration).

- If the distance from the inner surface of the plug is more than 1 mm remove diagnostic plug from bracket.

- Pull off wiring harness rubber grommet on underside of diagnostic plug and unlock lower part of diagnostic plug using BMW special tool kit 61 1 150

- Pull out receptacle for pin 19 at brown or brown/orange wire using tool 61 1 132 from above kit - make sure that other pin receptacles are not pulled out with it!

- Bend open three expanding lugs on side of receptacle and push receptacle back into chamber 19 as far as the stop.

- Turn lower part of plug to lock into place again.

- Put back rubber grommet and place diagnostic plug back in bracket.

Note:
For removing and installing terminals in plug housings see also Repair Instructions, Group 61-13.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 115. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 115 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing paper. Then affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Warranty Information:
Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty of 4 Years/50,000 Miles.

Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
