E36 General Information

The E36 is the replacement for the E30 and carries the BMW design philosophy, as introduced with the E32, to the 3 Series. Initially, the E36 will be produced only as a four door sedan, with other models being phased into production later.

The all new body has an aerodynamic wedge shape with a tapered nose and a high rear deck. It offers noticeably more interior room, especially rear seat leg room. Aerodynamic efficiency is enhanced by the covered headlights, integrated bumpers, bonded front and rear glass, flush mounted side windows, and internal rain gutters.

The drivetrain is the typical BMW layout, with engine choices initially limited to the M50 six cylinder with 3.1 Motronic, and a new Getrag five speed manual transmission (with direct drive fifth) or a THM-RI automatic transmission.
