SUBJECT:
Anti Lock Brake System (ABS)
MODELS:
3 Series (E36)
Situation:
Complaints may be received of the Anti Lock Brake System (ABS) switching off and illuminating the ABS warning lamp, with subsequent diagnosis revealing Fault Code 17 stored in the ABS fault memory (fault in the voltage supply of all solenoid valves or faulty left front inlet valve operation).
Cause:
Faulty contact in the ABS Relay.
Correction:
If this complaint is encountered and read-out of the Fault Memory reveals Fault Code 17 being stored, the ABS Relay (P/N 61 36 1 393 404) should be replaced before any further troubleshooting is performed. This will resolve the majority of these complaints, without the replacement of hydraulic units or control modules.
Note:
Faulty relays must be accompanied by the tester printout when returned to the Warranty Parts Return Center.
