Campaign - Loose Bolts On the ABS Hydraulic Unit

Group 34: Brakes
Bulletin Number: 34 04 93 (3918)

Woodcliff Lake, NJ
January 1994 Product Engineering

THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION BULLETIN SHOULD BE PERFORMED ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME SUCH VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
ABS Hydraulic Unit

MODELS:
1993 318is, 1993 325is, 1994 325iC

Situation:
During the assembly of the ABS Hydraulic Units in the affected vehicles, it is possible that the six bolts which fasten the bottom cover of the unit to the housing may not have been fully tightened.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves 1993 318is, 1993 325is, and 1994 325iC models.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the, DCS (Dealer Communications System). Proceed to "Inquiries;" "Vehicle History" and enter the chassis number (last seven characters) of the vehicle in question.

Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges, listed in illustration, are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor. The affected vehicles are limited to vehicles within these ranges but not all of these vehicles are affected by the Service Action. The final decision is the DCS inquiry.

Correction:
1. Check the hydraulic unit on all affected vehicles (identified by DCS inquiry) by torquing one bolt on the bottom cover to 15 N-m. If the bolt turns, the hydraulic unit must be replaced.

2. The bottom cover of the hydraulic unit is accessed from beneath the vehicle, reaching up from just behind the left-hand side engine mount. Using a T30 Torx(R) drive and an appropriate extension, torque either the front or rear inner bolt (depending on accessibility) to 15 N-m (10 ft.lb.).

3. If the bolt turns at this torque, replace the hydraulic unit. Refer to the Repair Manual, Section 34.

4. If the bolt does not turn, the hydraulic unit is properly torqued and does not need replacement.

Service Action Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 104. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-031) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 104 printed on the label (2); and,

c) bend the label to crease an edge and remove the backing, paper. Then affix the label to the "B" pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
