SUBJECT:
Fuel Tank Vent Valve Noise

MODELS:
E36 with M52 Engine

Situation:
A clicking/tapping noise may be heard coming from the engine compartment which may also be described as a hydraulic valve lifter noise.

Cause:
The fuel tank vent valve (TEV) located on the left front strut tower in the engine compartment, is transmitting normal operating noise through the body to the vehicles passenger compartment via the plastic mounting bracket and possibly the hose and tube routing to the bottom of the valve.

Correction:
If the above complaint is received the following repair should be performed to isolate the fuel tank vent valve noise:

Remove the mounting bolt and fuel tank vent valve.

Install a rubber mount (1) (part number 13 71 1 259 818) in the upper threaded hole of the fuel tank vent valve mounting bracket.

Reinstall the fuel tank vent valve with plastic mounting bracket on the rubber mount stud and secure using an M6 lock nut (2).

Note:
When securing the fuel tank vent valve to the rubber mount, the valve must be positioned with the electrical connector at the top and the hose/tube connections at the bottom of the valve shown in a the illustrations above. Assure that the hose and tube do not contact the body in the area of the mounting bracket for the ABS hydraulic unit when the installation is complete.
