SUBJECT:
Replacement of E36 Instrument Cluster

MODEL:
E36 (3 Series) - 318i/s/C, 325i/s/C, 328i/s/C, 318ti, Z3 roadster Vehicles produced up to 8/96

General Information:
Instrument clusters of updated design are specified in the EPC as regular replacement parts for vehicles produced up to 8/96. Specifically, replacement instrument clusters have provision for traction control, and in addition, all require the installation of a Coding Plug. This means that additional components will be required when replacing an instrument cluster in order to complete the installation successfully.

Notes:
1) All vehicles require the installation of an adapter harness. This harness sets the correct logic for the ABS warning lamp. Without the adapter harness, the ABS warning lamp is permanently on. Detailed instructions for adapter harness installation are included with the adapter harness, or refer to repair instruction 62 21 001.

2) 318i/s/C, 325i/s/C, 328i/s/C: These Instrument Clusters were not originally equipped with coding plug. When replacing the Instrument Cluster, a new coding plug must be installed. As the coding plug is new, no odometer mileage is transferred to the replacement Instrument Cluster, and an Odometer Notice Label must be completed. Refer to S.I.62 01 95 (4172).

Important!
Only in the event of customer dissatisfaction due to the replacement cluster showing zero miles on the odometer, request the transfer of total odometer mileage using the procedure described in S.I. 62 02 95. After installation, the instrument cluster must be coded using DIS or MoDiC.

3) 318ti and Z3 roadster: These Instrument Clusters were originally equipped with a coding plug. When replacing the Instrument Cluster, the installation of the coding plug from the old cluster into the replacement cluster transfers the odometer mileage to the replacement cluster. Refer to repair instruction 62 10 000, tests 15 and 9 for the mileage transfer procedure.

The table lists the correct parts to install in the event that replacement of an Instrument Cluster is necessary.
