PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT:
Throttle Body Heater - Coolant Hose

MODEL:
E36 with M52 engine

Situation:
An incorrect throttle body coolant return hose may have been installed on a limited number of 328i vehicles in production. This hose does not meet BMW coolant hose specifications and may develop a leak.

Vehicles Affected:
This Service Action involves E36 vehicles with M52 engines produced in 3/97.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DOS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed below are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor

Model Chassis Number Ranges

328i/4 AV 20431 - AV 20505
328i/4A AV 51457 - AV 51617

Correction:
Check and if necessary replace the throttle body heater coolant hose on all affected vehicles as outlined below.

Procedure:
Check the embossed BMW part number on the throttle body heater coolant return hose (1).

^ If the BMW part number is 13 54 1 703 945 the hose is the new style and no further action is necessary.

^ If the part number is 11 15 1 740 393 the hose must be replaced with a new hose part number 13 54 1 703 945.

Note:
If the part number of the installed hose (1) is not visible the hoses can also be identified by the outer surface appearance.

The correct hose (P/N 13 54 1 703 945)has a lightly corrugated surface and is mat gray - black in color.

The incorrect hose (P/N 11 15 1 740 393) has a smooth surface and is glossy black in color.

Since the coolant feed hose (2) is the correct type of hose on all affected vehicles, the surface appearance should be identical when comparing hose (1) with (2).

^ Remove the air cleaner housing with air mass meter and intake bellows boot as outlined in the repair manual, group 1371.

^ Install the new style throttle body heater return hose.

^ Reinstall the air cleaner housing with air mass meter and intake bellows boot. Check and top up coolant if necessary.
