SUBJECT:
Child Airbag Warning Labels

MODEL:
All 1997 produced after February 24, 1997

Situation:
The Federal Government requires all automobile manufacturers to apply certain warning labels to the sun visors and the instrument panel. This takes effect as of the vehicle manufacturing date of February 25, 1997.

With the introduction of these new labels, the self - adhesive labels described in SI 72 07 96 (which are applied to the door panels or B - pillar) are no longer needed.

General Information:
Sun Visors:

On BMW models, the new warning label is "silk - screened" onto only one surface of the driver's and passenger's visors.

The text is identical to that of the labels described in SI 72 O7 96.

The label is visible on the front of the visor when it is in the stored position against the headliner.

The other side of the new visor does not contain any text at all. Previously, the sliding cover for the make - up mirror (1) contained additional text. Due to the warning on the front side, the mirror cover text is no longer needed.

Instrument Panel Warning Label:

A new label (shown) is applied to the center area of the instrument panel (IP).

This label may be applied to various areas on different models:

Glovebox lid (Z3; 3, 8 Series)

Center console storage tray, ahead of transmission shift lever (5, 7 Series)

Per federal regulations, the label must remain in position while the vehicle is at your facility. It may only be removed by the customer, if desired, after retail delivery.

If it is necessary to replace the IP label on a vehicle in your inventory due to improper label adhesion, first clean the application area with rubbing alcohol.
