Situation:
When diagnosing wind noise complaints, one area that is frequently overlooked is the lifting pads under the body. If these pads are missing or do not fit properly, the passage of air over the openings in the body can cause a wind noise in areas far from the opening that is causing the noise.
An example of this is wind noises that seem to come from the top of the windshield or A-pillar area of the E38, which have been found to be caused by a missing or incorrectly fitting front or rear lift pad.
Whenever a wind noise complaint is being diagnosed, all four lift pads should first be checked to ensure they are properly installed. If the body opening has been bent out of shape so that the pad does not fit tightly, it must be corrected so that the pad seals against the body.
