Ignition Lock Sticks

E36
Situation:
Customers may complain about the ignition lock sticking on E36s produced prior to 5/97.
Cause:
The ignition switch tails to return fully to the stop when the car is turned oft. This prevents the lock from turning readily when a restart is attempted.
Correction:
The ignition switches were redesigned in 5/97 to include a spring to ensure that the switch returns fully.
Procedure:
In case of customer complaint, replace the ignition switch per Repair Instructions 61 31 020.
Parts Information:
Please refer to EPC for correct switch part number based on production date of car. Two screws, part number 32 30 1 159 449, are also required.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty.
