SUBJECT:
Service Action to Install Cable Straps on Battery Cable

MODEL:
M roadster

Situation:
The positive lead to the battery (B+ cable) may chafe on two stud bolts installed in the trunk of some M roadster and M coupe vehicles.

Cause:
Two unused stud bolts were installed in the trunk of some vehicles.

Affected Vehicles:
This Service Action affects M roadster vehicles produced between Aug 31, 1998, and Sept. 28, 1998.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

Correction:
Fasten the B+ cable to the two stud bolts using cable straps.

Procedure:

1. Remove the trunk floor mat, and pull the right wheelwell trim cover back to access the battery cable.

2. Remove the two M6 plastic nuts (1) and pull off cable cover.

3. Remove right cable cover (2) by sliding to the left (black arrows).

4. Lift the battery cable and check for the presence of two stud bolts (1) on the trunk floor.

NOTE:
(Not every vehicle will be equipped with stud bolts at this location!).

If stud bolts are found in the specified location, continue with step 5.

If no stud bolts are seen, continue with step 6.

5. Install two cable straps (p/n 61 13 1 373 565) onto the two stud bolts, then secure battery cable with the straps.

6. Reinstall battery cable covers, wheelwell trim cover, and trunk floor mat.

Label Instructions:
This Service Action has been assigned code number 231. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (SD 92-095) and:

a) emboss your BMW dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b) punch out code number 231 printed on the label and,

c) affix the label to the B pillar as shown:

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.

Covered under the terms of the BMW New Car Limited Warranty. Reimbursement for this Service Action will be provided through Campaign Entry.
